Futura
Maybe in the near future, kids will understand 'D' as a big fat sideways smile before they understand it as a capital letter d.
Maybe also in the future, I will be able to write a facebook status update that says 'I wish my neighbours would stop being so fucking noisy' and they would quieten down just as soon as if I yelled it from my window.
Tetchy today? You bet.

South

I have been carrying around my Svalbard tote bag for the past two days, as a talisman against the heat.
The house is at this stage so hot that it feels difficult to breathe inside; last night I slept on a wet towel for most of the night. Absurd?!
The whole city seems flattened by yesterday's moistureless 43 degrees (celcius). Walking through Carlton last night, not even the parks afforded a sense of coolness, and the grass was crisp to walk on, in spite of all the recent rain. Birds rested and flip-flopped about on the ground, too hot to be in a tree. All the plants are tired. All our students were tired this morning. Everyone is tired. Did anyone sleep last night? The overnight minimum temperature was 30.6 and that was recorded at 8.49am.
At least the libraries are well-attended. Aircon and free wireless.
I think it's time to move further South.

Ideas for pop songs
I never get around to making music, preferring to live vicariously through the musical obsessions of others, so I thought I would post here two pop-song ideas I have had recently, in the hope that someone might purloin them and become rich and fat on the results...
1) Rebound song, which uses the sounds basketballs make when they bounce about on the hoop but don't go in, as drum samples, one particularly good sequence of bounces being looped to produce a swinging 'big beat' type of thing. The song would be about breaking up and being 'on the rebound', but of course would be full of basketball metaphors, and the filmclip would comprise the playing out of a sexual drama through a basketball game.
2) Yes! Ja! Oui! Da! Si! Hai!
This would be a song in which the lyrics were made up entirely of words that mean 'yes' in different languages. Or it could be a duet with, as I picture it, all the words for 'yes' being sung by a girl, and all the words for 'no' being sung by a boy.

Another resolution
When forced to go in with your eyes closed, look into the blackness, before sending thoughts into it. It is easier to understand the nature of the world outside yourself that way.

New year's resolutions:
Swear less (though don't cease entirely).
Keep mobile phone switched off more than on.
Deciding on titles for artworks and exhibitions that do not contain song titles or lyrics!
